Is it bad to make things which are useless?

I am a professional creator of useless things. A professional whose job is to make things which cannot be used for anything. I love things which are useless but there are still many people in this world who think that making useless things like this is a waste. When we are fooling around and not doing anything, we are told, “Stop wasting your time!”. When we buy something that we like, we are told, “You are wasting money again!” How do you feel when you read this? Do you think that it is not good to make things which are useless?

From Failure to Success!

Things which are useless are very important in our life. Not just us, but for everyone in this world. Things which appear to be useless can end up serving a useful purpose for people.

If we look around us, we will find many products which exist now because we tried to find a purpose for things which initially appeared to be useless. A good example of this would be sticky notes. One researcher wanted to invent a very strong glue, but for some reason the researcher ended up with a very weak glue instead. To put it simply, he failed. However, he started to ask himself, “Maybe this can be used for something else?”, and this was how sticky notes came about. To appreciate the value of things which appear to be useless is to accept failure with a gracious heart.

Only people who understand the value of useless things are able to transform something which is regarded as a failure to most people into a success. And the world will become a more pleasant place when we can convert failure into success. I can assure you of this.

I am bad at my job. I want to make cool-looking robots, but I always end up making lousy ones. I want to make cute stuffed toys, but I always end up making ugly stuffed toys instead. However, what is normally seen as a failure, can be seen as a huge success if our intention is to “make things which are useless”. So what if they are lousy robots and ugly stuffed toys, there’s nothing wrong with them. They are interesting, and they are great fun! If you can think this way, you have the power of ‘creating waste’. To appreciate the value of something which is useless is to discover a new purpose which we are not aware of before.

Many of the things that are considered ‘useless’ or ‘waste of time’ are things that other people wouldn’t make. The useless things that I make wouldn’t have appeared in this world if I didn’t exist. Only one person can make something useless like this, so useless things are unique creations.

It’s okay even if you are clumsy or sloppy. Let us dive into a world where nothing is considered a failure. Yes, everyone, let us make more useless things from now on!

Rules for making useless things

You are free to make useless things in whatever way you want. But, in order to enjoy this freedom to make whatever we want, some rules are still necessary. However, even if you break these rules, nothing will happen to you.

You can make whatever you want, whether they are useful things or not.

Even though we are trying to make useless things, this does not mean that it is wrong even if you end up making something useful. Of course, making something that is not useful is also not a big deal. If you somehow ended up making something useful, don’t say to yourself, “Oops, I accidentally made something useful. I failed!” Instead, please say to yourself, “Wow, I made something useful even though I wasn’t trying to. I’m a genius!”

Don’t think, just start by moving our hands

Making something can be very troublesome. It will take a lot of time , and you have to think about many things. Very often, the work is boring and does not turn out the way you want. That’s why I try to move my hands before I think.

If I think too much even before I start, I can’t stop thinking about how troublesome this is going to be, and sometimes end up quitting before I have started. There is no way I will ever be able to make anything if that happens! If an exciting idea comes to you, it is crucial that you start to work on it and move your hands while you are still burning with excitement and don’t think too much about it. Once you start moving your hands, you might be surprised to find that even a troublesome job can be completed!

Have fun with how bad you are as you work on it

Human beings are clumsy animals. Just like how you can’t draw a perfectly straight line when you want to, we are not always born with the skills that we need. However, when human beings repeatedly do the same thing, they will gradually become better at doing it. It’s all about making things that you like, while having fun at how clumsy and unskillful you are.

If someone saw what you were making, and told you that you are bad at what you are doing, you should reply with “Yes, that’s true, isn’t it?” Try to speak in a tone where you are asking the person, “what’s wrong with that?” Don’t think of the comment as something bad, concentrate on what you are making and don’t take what people are saying too seriously. By continuing to have fun while you are making things, you will become better and better at it.

Don’t panic even if it doesn’t turn out the way you want

Creating waste is about creating something which was in your mind. This includes making something which nobody has made before. You may have a recipe to follow when you are cooking something, but you do not always have a set of instructions (like those that come in plastic model kits) that someone else has created for you to follow. Things will not necessarily go the way you want.  You might feel beaten and want to give up, when you feel that you are bad at doing this.

However, it can be a good thing when things don’t go exactly the way you want them to. When difficult problems arise, just take a walk outside while you think about how to solve them. Then, you move your hands. And think again. In this way, you will have fun as you slowly become closer and closer to finishing what you are making.

Try to come up with a purpose for what you have made

Anyone can say “This is a work of art” or “I created a piece of avant garde art” after creating something messy and unusual. What’s so interesting about making something useless or wasteful is trying to come up with a purpose or function for it at the end. It does not matter what is the purpose that you came up with for what you have made. It can be ‘a robot which is therapeutic to look at’ or ‘a machine which makes us realize that gravity exists’. Think about the kind of impact what you have created can have on other people, and come up with a purpose as you are making something ‘useless’!

Fall in love with the useless things you make

If what you have made works the way that you want it to, praise it just like how you would praise a baby who has started to crawl. “Well done!” Just like how you would want to keep a record of the growth of your own baby, take plenty of pictures of what you have made!

It is important that you love your creations, no matter how useless they turn out to be.

Why did you start making things which are useless?

I love to make things when I was a child. However, as I grow up into an adult, somehow I was no longer able to just make random things. I was constrained by the belief that adults can only make beautiful and functional things, and I was unable to enjoy the process of making things in the same way that I did as a child. However, one day it occurred to me that I can continue to make things which are useless if I call them “useless things” to start with, and once I tried this out I felt that the mindset which used to constrain me disappeared. I was very happy with this idea, and since then I have been continuing in my quest to make things which are useless. Not only that, I find that ideas for making such things kept appearing in my head. I remember thinking that I have a talent for making things which are not useful.

The mindset that ‘I should only be making things that work’ can sometimes limit what we can achieve. However, we should have the freedom to make whatever we want. No matter how bad or clumsy you are , making things should be something fun, something which adds color to our lives.
